India's Malnutrition Crisis
Despite being the world's fifth-largest economy, India ranks 107th out of 121 countries on the Global Hunger Index (2023). According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), 35.5% of children under five in India are stunted and 19.3% are wasted. These are not just statistics — they represent millions of children whose physical and cognitive development is permanently compromised.
Malnutrition is both a cause and consequence of poverty. Malnourished children are more likely to fall ill, miss school, and earn less as adults — perpetuating a vicious cycle across generations.
How Nutrition Programmes Work
Effective nutrition programmes go beyond simply distributing food. They address the root causes of malnutrition through a multi-pronged approach:
- Direct Nutrition Support: Weekly ration kits containing rice, dal, oil, fortified flour, and seasonal vegetables for families below the poverty line.
- Mother and Child Health Workshops: Training sessions on breastfeeding best practices, balanced diets using locally available foods, and hygiene.
- Kitchen Garden Initiative: Helping families grow their own vegetables using organic methods — reducing dependence on purchased food and improving dietary diversity.
- Monitoring and Referral: Regular weight and height tracking for children under five, with referrals to government health centres for severely malnourished cases.
Suryanvi Foundation's Annapurna Programme
Our Annapurna (Food for Life) programme supports families across our operational areas with weekly nutrition kits and monthly health check-ups. In the past year, we have served thousands of family packs and seen measurable improvements in child health indicators among our beneficiary families.
"Before the ration kits, my children would go to school on an empty stomach. Now they eat a proper meal every morning. Their teacher says they are more attentive in class." — A beneficiary mother
The Link Between Nutrition and Education
A well-nourished child is a better learner. Research consistently shows that children who eat a nutritious breakfast score higher on tests, have better attendance, and are more engaged in classroom activities. This is why Suryanvi Foundation Trust integrates nutrition and education in all our community programmes.
Support a Family Today
A donation of ₹750 provides a family of four with a week's worth of nutritional support. Every rupee you give goes directly to sourcing, packing, and distributing food to those who need it most.
