What Are the Sustainable Development Goals?
In 2015, all 193 United Nations member states adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — a universal blueprint to achieve a better, more sustainable future for all by 2030. The goals address global challenges including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, and lack of access to education and healthcare.
India, as the world's most populous country, plays a pivotal role in determining whether the SDGs are achieved globally. With over 3.4 million registered NGOs, India's civil society sector is among the largest — and most critical — contributors to SDG progress.
SDGs That Drive Suryanvi Foundation's Work
At Suryanvi Foundation Trust, our programmes directly contribute to several SDGs:
- SDG 1 — No Poverty: Our nutrition and family support programmes provide essential supplies to families below the poverty line, helping them meet basic survival needs.
- SDG 2 — Zero Hunger: The Annapurna programme distributes weekly nutrition kits and promotes kitchen gardens for food security.
- SDG 4 — Quality Education: Our Vidya Jyoti programme ensures children receive school supplies, tutoring, and digital literacy training.
- SDG 13 — Climate Action: Through the Hariyali programme, we plant thousands of native trees annually and educate communities on environmental stewardship.
- SDG 15 — Life on Land: Our tree plantation drives restore local biodiversity and prevent soil erosion.
- SDG 17 — Partnerships for the Goals: We collaborate with government agencies, corporates, and other NGOs to amplify impact.
India's SDG Progress: Where Do We Stand?
According to NITI Aayog's SDG India Index 2023–24, India's overall SDG score has improved from 57 to 66 out of 100 since 2018. However, significant gaps remain in areas like nutrition (SDG 2), gender equality (SDG 5), and climate action (SDG 13). States like Kerala and Tamil Nadu lead the rankings, while states in central and eastern India lag behind.
This is precisely where grassroots NGOs make the biggest difference — by reaching communities that government programmes alone cannot serve.
The Power of Local Action
Global goals are achieved through local action. Every tree planted, every child educated, and every family supported brings India one step closer to meeting its SDG commitments. At Suryanvi Foundation Trust, we measure our impact against SDG indicators — because accountability matters.
